Noir Matière

A residential penthouse interior at Lana Residences, Dorchester Collection, Dubai. Commissioned by BOOBROOK — a design studio whose practice is built on reduction, material presence, and the precise orchestration of light and darkness. The project was conceived as an exploration of architectural scenography within a private residence, where shadow, texture, and scale continuously redefine the atmosphere.

Noir Matière presented a fundamental contradiction as a subject: spaces conceived in darkness that needed to communicate warmth. The design deliberately embraced blackened surfaces, raw mineral textures, and monolithic forms as its primary language. The photographic risk was that everything could collapse into murk — textures lost, depth compressed, material nuance gone.

The shoot would rely on natural light only. No artificial setups, no supplemental strobes. The brief demanded that the images reflect the same restraint the architecture embodied.

BOOBROOK's intention was never documentation. The goal was to translate the emotional and scenographic logic of the space into a still image — to make the architecture felt rather than simply seen. Every frame needed to carry the same paradox the designers had embedded in the space itself: brutalist presence that reads as warm and intimate.

The images also needed to function across multiple contexts: editorial publication, award submissions, and the designers' own portfolio. That demanded both visual restraint and technical range across the full tonal spectrum of the space.

Each frame was planned around specific moments in the day when light entered the space at angles that revealed texture without softening the atmosphere. Working with polished concrete, blackened oak, oxidized steel, and deep-toned stone, the light needed to do heavy lifting — separating surfaces that read almost identically in flat conditions.

Sunset was the critical hour. At that quality of light, the mineral surfaces produced a depth that no artificial setup could have replicated. The warmth of the late sun against the cool, dark palette created the very tension the architecture was built around. Those frames became the defining images of the project.

The project was awarded Best Photography Project of the Year at the Créateurs Design Awards, with the ceremony held at Shangri-La Paris. Benjamin and Natacha were both present the night the award was announced — seeing the people behind the work share that moment made it one worth remembering.

The photography was also submitted to the Arctasavision Awards in May 2026. BOOBROOK licensed the full image set for their editorial and portfolio use. The collaboration became a genuine dialogue: the space experienced through the images as an immersive emotional landscape — cinematic, introspective, and atmospheric.
